Antique Eastlake Dining Table Two Leaves
In the last part of the nineteenth century (1870 - 1890), a reform movement spread through the U.S. changing the way people thought about style and health in their homes. Until this time people had decorated their homes with large heavily carved pieces of furniture with thick upholstery and draperies that collected dust and germs -- and kept fresh air and healthy light out of their homes. This new simpler style was the brainchild of Charles Lock Eastlake, an architect and arts writer, author of Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details. Eastlake believed the things in people's homes should be attractive and well made by workers who took pride in their work. The book gained popularity in the U.S., and furniture makers took designs from the book, making what became known as Eastlake furniture.
This lovely dining table was part of the Eastlake movement. Looking across its beautiful top, one can imagine the hundreds of family dinners it has seen, the homework sessions it hosted and perhaps the family discussions it witnessed. Without the leaves, the table is a compact 45" square that would fit in any cozy dining room. Included are two leaves that are each 13" wide, which extends the table to just under 6' (71") -- big enough for a family dinner. The table stands 29-1/2". No piece of furniture lives for more than 100 years without some signs of its age. There are small dings and wear marks, which you can see in the photos. You can also see the character of solid construction that has nothing to do with plastic and veneer. Please examine them carefully as they are part of the description. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the table and its condition.
I believe the table is made of American walnut, and as you can see in the photos, it has a beautiful rich walnut stain. I believe the framework of the mechanism that allows the table to separate for insertion of the leaves is constructed of pine. When closed, the table top rests on a gorgeous pedestal with four decorative right-angle legs on casters. When open, a spindle leg (with caster) extends to provide center support.
Please message me with any questions you may have. I am listing this item as pick-up only, but if you would like to arrange to have the table crated and shipped by the freight carrier of your choice, I would be happy to work with them.
