Description

J & G Meakin Platter Nonpareil Semi-Porcelain

At their potteries in England, J & G Meakin made beautiful dishes and serving pieces for more than 100 years. This is a gorgeous example of the pottery's work. This serving platter is in the lovely "Nonpareil" pattern. "Nonpareil," of course, means "having no equal" or "better than all others," and that certainly describes this beautiful pattern. More commonly found in purple and white or blue and white, this particular platter is rendered in a charming teal. In addition to the floral sprays painted under the glaze, the platter features lovely embossed designs around the rim. What a lovely way to serve your family and friends during the coming holiday season!

The platter is a generous 13-7/8" long and is 10-7/8" wide ... ample room for your turkey, ham or roast (with carrots and little brown potatoes, of course!). The back of the platter bears the Meakin crown mark, which includes "Hanley England" and the name of the pattern, dating the piece after 1907. There is a small numeral "3" just above the maker's mark. The capital letters "SP" are impressed into the porcelain, along with "22." This may indicate the platter was made in September of 1922. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. It has a delicate network of crazing, a testimony to its vintage state.
