This Luger was manufactured by DWM in 1918, and is whats reffered to as a "Double Stamp" Luger, bearing both the original 1918 date and an additional 1920 stamp.
The 1918 date marks its production just before the end of World War I. That same year, the German Empire relinquished its governing control to the Weimar Republic, and just two days later, the new government of Germany signed the Armistice of Compiègne, bringing the guns on the Western Front to silence.
By 1920, the Weimar government began re-arsenalizing pre-war arms to comply with new post-war regulations—hence the added 1920 stamp.
Sometime later, likely around 1922, this Luger was issued to the Wiesbaden Police Department in Hesse, Germany where upon its arrival, it received a property mark on the grip: "S.W.I" for Schutzpolizei Wiesbaden, District 1.
Its journey from police service in Germany to its eventual arrival in the U.S. remains a mystery—but its story up to that point is a fascinating piece of 20th-century history.
