Shooting Star poster from June 24, 1981 – DJs – Hays, KS
Several members of this six man rock band grew up in Overland Park, KS and graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in the mid 70’s. (Van McLain -1974). They signed their first recording contract with Arista Records as The Shooting Stars in early 1975 but were released later that year. In 1978 they signed with Virgin Records as Shooting Star and in 1979 went to London to record their self titled debut album – Shooting Star. Despite line-up changes with band members and changing record labels several more times, the band continued to record and release over 20 albums and singles over the next 40 years. They played at various venues across the United States and toured with Heart, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Cheap Trick, Journey, REO Speedwagon, John Mellencamp, Kansas, Jefferson Starship and other popular rock bands of the 1980s.
The concert in Hays in 1981 consisted of the original band members for Shooting Star: Van McLain (guitars, vocals), Gary West (lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums), Bill Guffey (keyboards), Steve Thomas (drums), Ron Verlin (bass) and Charles Waltz (violin, keyboards, vocals).
Shooting Star was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2009. On March 2, 2018, founding band member Van McClain died of complications from West Nile Virus. With a revamped line-up, the band continued to play 10 to 12 shows per year and in 2024 played across the Midwest and performed with Foghat, Head East and The Little River Band.
Special note about the venue - DJs (located at 7th & Fort Street – Hays, KS) where Shooting Star played on June 24, 1981. This location was owned by Don & John Schmidt and was a popular dance / DJ bar in the late 1970s and early 80s. Prior to becoming DJs, it was a downtown Hays Dillons grocery store. Later it became The Rose (country bar & grill) and is currently The Fort Tavern and Patio Bar.
