This is an all-original 1961 Comet, sold by Mercury, with just over 80k original miles. This car is in very good condition for an original “normal use” vehicle, but it is not perfect. It would make a good patina or rat-rod style cruiser as-is, or a great starter project for a beginner since it needs so little. This can easily be a fair-weather cruiser, but daily driven, it might require some updating.
It is amazingly rust free and no patch work is evident, though there is surface rust due to sand road pitting by the previous owners.
Drive train is all original. Engine is a 170 CID Ford inline 6cyl, with a three-speed manual (on the column).
This little devil runs great and is fun to drive - especially with the 3 speed manual. All the lights work, emergency brake works, door locks work correctly and windows roll up and down fine. The glass is good. The windshield wipers are vacuum operated from the fuel pump, and yes, they also still work - as well as they ever did.
New Items Include:
New 13” tires, battery, master brake cylinder, spark plugs, wires, cap and condenser and a new fuel pickup and gauge assembly in the tank. The gas tank has been removed and cleaned out. The single-barrel carburetor is a Holley, which has also been rebuilt.
Needs:
Interior needs to be redone to be nice. There are bumps and bruises on the body. Most of the chrome is good, but all the “Comet” emblems are missing and the exterior mirror needs replaced. The radio is missing. This car is so original that the generator is still on it - works and is in use, but has a hard time keeping up. The original muffler is still on it, but blown out (and a little loud as a result).
I really need to turn this car into cash, but will entertain trades for rolling 28-34 Ford Coupe or Roadster projects.
