HISTORY: The .38 Special is a rimmed, centerfire cartridge, most commonly used in revolvers. It was a common sidearm cartridge used by soldiers in World War I, and the standard service cartridge of most police departments in the US from the 1920s to the early 1990s.
Small snubnoosed revolvers were introduced in the 19th Century, but found a resurgence in popularity in the United States starting in the mid-1990s, due to the passage of Right to Carry laws in various states and the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that limited the availability of pistol magazines holding more than 10 rounds.
